BASW Admissions Criteria

Abstract

The School of Social Work embraces the mission of Eastern Washington University to expand opportunities for personal transformation through excellence in learning. The School's Bachelor of Arts in Social Work (BASW) and Master of Social Work (MSW) Programs are fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.

    Students must be admitted to EWU (EWU Admissions) and be admitted to the School of Social Work, Cheney Spokane Program, Vancouver Program.

    1. Applicants must have no more than two general education core requirements (GECRs) to be completed at the time of their application.
    2.  Courses that are in progress during the spring quarter in which the student is applying may be counted toward meeting the preceding criterion.
    3.  Applicants must have completed English 201 or an equivalent course at another college or university with a minimum grade of 2.7 or B- at the time of their application.
    4.  Applicants must have completed intermediate algebra with a minimum grade of 2.0 at the time of application.
    5. Students shall be advised at the time of application and admission that all GECR or EWU Graduation Requirements, except Senior Capstone, must be completed before a student may begin their practicum during the second year of the program.
    6.  A minimum GPA of 2.5 is required to apply.
    7. Previous Life or Work Experience cannot be substituted for course credit.

    Professional readiness criteria:  1. Students must have spent a minimum of 40 hours in a volunteer or paraprofessional capacity working in one agency or organization where the applicant's primary responsibilities directly involved working with others in a helping process.
     
    2. Students must include verification, through one of their references being the person who had direct supervisory responsibility over them and their volunteer or paraprofessional work.

    3. Students must provide two professional or academic references and one MUST be from volunteer or Human Services work experience supervisor. Please contact Diane Somerday at dsomerday@ewu.edu or 509-359-6482 if you have any questions about criteria for admission.

    Transfer Students/Direct Transfer Degrees:

    Applicants must have either one of the following:

    1. A completed Direct Transfer Agreement (DTA) from a community college in Washington, an Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer (AAOT) from a community college in Oregon or a transfer degree from specific community colleges in Idaho and Montana.     2. Those who have not completed a transfer degree and/or who are transferring from another university/college must have their credits evaluated on a course-by-course basis for approval of admission for the following requirements.
      a.  90 quarter credits or 60 semester credits, completed
      b.  Intermediate Algebra with a grade of 2.0
      c.  English College Composition; Analysis, Research and Documentation with a grade of 2.7. 
      d. Two years of high school or one year of college foreign language.
