    CHENEY, Washington - The U.S. Department of Education has awarded Eastern Washington University $1.3 million in grant re-funding under the Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program.

    This is a renewal of a very competitive grant that EWU's TRiO McNair Scholar Program as received continuously since 1996.

    Beginning this fall the renewal grant will be for more than $266,000 annually over five years, allowing Eastern to prepare eligible participants for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities.

    Participants in the McNair Program are from disadvantaged backgrounds and have demonstrated strong academic potential. EWU has a long history of enrolling first-generation, low-income and underrepresented students in higher education.

    The project merges the elite world of the academic doctorate with the world of disadvantaged, yet highly capable students. To this end, Eastern will provide 29 eligible participants with research experience to ensure their preparedness for acceptance into and success in doctoral programs.
