This online distance-learning hybrid program is designed for working professionals and is offered through online coursework with synchronous and in-person training requirements. Program graduates earn both a school psychology certificate and an Educational Specialist degree in school psychology. Appropriate candidates for the program are educators or those working in education, counseling, mental health or psychology-related fields. The program now accepts applicants with both master's and bachelor's degrees. Applicants with bachelor's degrees must have completed either three years of full-time teaching or at least five years of relevant professional experience in a closely related field to be considered. We adhere to a scientist-practitioner model that prepares students for practice as a school psychologist. Candidates completing our program earn their Educational Specialist Degree and receive a Residency Educational Staff Associate (ESA) Certificate in School Psychology from Washington's Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI). Students are encouraged to seek national certification through preparation of individual portfolios.
Coursework, practicum, internship, and portfolio expectations are aligned with state and national training standards set forth by the National Association of School Psychologists. Specific areas of training include student and program evaluation (measurement principles); development of academic and social-behavioral intervention plans (e.g., instructional and behavioral analysis, consultation and home-school collaboration); and research (methods and statistics). The program adopts a preventive focus by training candidates to assess and intervene at the individual, school-wide and at-risk group level. Knowledge and skills are developed through integrated coursework, field experiences and internship.
How long is the program?
Students have an option to complete the School Psychology Respecialization program in either 2 or 3 years. Both options include coursework during the summer sessions. Students who choose the 2-year option complete full-time coursework for 5 quarters and then a full-time, 1200 hour internship. Students who choose the 3-year option complete coursework part-time for 8 quarters prior to completing the same, full-time, 1200 hour internship.

How does the program work? How often do I have to come to campus?
The program is run in a cohort model (where the same students will be in classes together throughout the program) and delivered through Eastern Online; facilitated using Canvas software. Students log into their courses on their own time to complete asynchronous components such as discussion boards and individual assignments. Live sessions are held on Monday evenings from 6-9pm PST. There is 4-day on-campus requirement in the fall of each year that takes place over a long weekend. Students meet at our Riverpoint campus in Spokane to participate in advising, attend live classes, attend certification trainings, meet their instructors, and connect as a group. The fall on-site happens each fall that students are enrolled in the program (once a year).
I live out-of-state. Am I still eligible?
Yes. Our program offers educational opportunities to students in multiple state jurisdictions. Due to a new state authorization initiative throughout the nation, all universities offering education outside of their state must be authorized by each state in which they offer courses. What are the requirements to be considered for the School Psychology Respecialization Program?
Can I transfer in any of my master's coursework?
Yes. Eastern Washington University allows consideration of graduate work to transfer into a new program of study. All transfer requests must be made at the time of admission and there is a review process that is completed by the admissions committee utilizing the attached review form. As students are required to produce a portfolio as part of their culminating project, we encourage serious consideration regarding the request to transfer credits. I have a doctorate in a related area and want to become a school psychologist. Am I eligible to transfer in more coursework than what is listed on the Transfer Credit Request Form?
No. School Psychology is a unique field that blends psychological, academic and social/emotional assessment with consultation, mental health services, and varied interventions to promote the academic achievement and personal enrichment of school-aged children. Our program is aligned with the standards of the National Association of School Psychologists which expects that students must complete at least 90 quarter credit hours of an organized program of study in school psychology to be eligible to apply for national certification. A program of study in school psychology must include 81 credits of coursework outside of the 1200 required internship. In order to prepare our students for national certification, we require the same level of rigor in school psychology specific coursework. A course challenge process can be used in special cases. All program of study development is individualized at the time of admission.
How often does the program admit students? Is there rolling admission?
We admit once a year in winter for a summer quarter start. The program is run as a cohort model where the same students will be in classes together throughout the program. We believe this promotes collaboration and community in our distance-learning students to the betterment of their learning experience.

How does the application process work?

Application files must be complete by March 1st to be considered for an interview. All interviews will be conducted via video conferencing. The equipment needed for the interview consists of a web-camera (can be internal to your laptop or external), a headset with a microphone and a wired internet connection (wireless tends to be slower and could impact either the video or audio component of the transmission). Admission decisions are made following your application interview.
When will I be notified of my application status?
All candidates will be notified no later than April 15th as to their status. All candidates who were accepted to the program are to notify us by May 1st of their plans for attending.
Is there an alternate list?
We do have an alternate list as each year we are honored to have many qualified applicants but, unfortunately, have limited space. After intentions to attend are returend, we will contact those on the alternate list about their acceptance status.
What is the significance of the April 15th acceptance date?
Determining which graduate program to attend is one of the most important educational decisions a prospective school psychologist will make. Along with several other school psychology training programs, we believe all student candidates deserve the opportunity to consider their options and admission offers before making such a decision. This policy is consistent with policies set by Council of Directors of School Psychology Programs (CDSPP), Trainers of School Psychologists (TSP), National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), and the School Psychology Educators Council of New York (SPECNYS).

Course Requirements and Credit Hours
