This degree combines studies of mathematics, computer science, physics and engineering technology. The mechanical engineering technology curriculum includes courses fundamental to mechanical engineering technology with an emphasis on applications.
Before graduation, each student will participate in a design project or an internship in industry to gain industrial experience during his or her academic career before employment. The emphasis of this program is the application of engineering principles to the solution of practical problems. MET graduates are in great demand and are employed in a variety of interesting, high-tech careers throughout the state and region. Employment opportunities are available in mechanical design, industrial engineering technology, industrial management, manufacturing, CAD, applied research and sales and service.
The EWU Mechanical Engineering Technology program is accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission (ETAC) of ABET, http://abet.org.
Student outcomes (SOs) describe what students are expected to know and be able to do by the time of graduation. Specifically, ABET EAC Criterion 3 specifies the following (minimal) required SOs:
a. An ability to select and apply the knowledge, techniques, skills, and modern tools of the discipline to broadly-defined engineering technology activities.
b. An ability to select and apply a knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering, and technology to engineering technology problems that require the application of principles and applied procedures or methodologies.
c. An ability to conduct standard tests and measurements; to conduct, analyze, and interpret experiments; and to apply experimental results to improve processes.
d. An ability to design systems, components, or processes for broadly-defined engineering technology problems appropriate to program educational objectives.
e. An ability to function effectively as a member or leader on a technical team.
f. An ability to identify, analyze, and solve broadly-defined engineering technology problems.
g. an ability to apply written, oral, and graphical communication in both technical and non-technical environments; and an ability to identify and use appropriate technical literature.
h. an understanding of the need for and an ability to engage in self-directed continuing professional development.
i. an understanding of and a commitment to address professional and ethical responsibilities including a respect for diversity.
j. a knowledge of the impact of engineering technology solutions in a societal and global context.
k. commitment to quality, timeliness, and continuous improvement.
Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) are broad statements that describe what graduates of the program are expected to have attained within a few years of graduation. For the EWU Mechanical Engineering program the following PEOs have been defined:
Objective 1: Practice engineering or a closely related field through the application of fundamental engineering knowledge (maps to ABET criterion 3 a,b,c,d,f,i,j,k).
Objective 2: Actively promote the Engineering Profession through professional and community involvement (maps to ABET criterion 3 d,e,i,j).
Objective 3: Engage in lifelong learning through activities such as continuing education, professional licensure, and graduate studies (maps to ABET criterion 3 g,h,i).
Learn to convey your ideas with today's powerful drafting and parametric modeling software. Study concludes with the creation of actual prototype from the rapid prototyper.
These courses build on concepts introduced in the general physics series and form the basis for more detailed exploration and problem solving in the realm of mechanical engineering.
Become familiar with industry standards for technical metals and other materials. Learn the fundamentals of metalworking tools and procedures and apply your knowledge to the study of machine elements and components.
Utilize actual industrial robots in the robotics laboratory to learn automated industrial systems programming and implementation. Coursework includes group projects initiated, designed and managed by students.
The Mechanical Engineering Technology Program requires that students choose to emphasize, through a series of elective courses, either a manufacturing or design focus to fill out their studies.
