    This degree combines studies of mathematics, computer science, physics and engineering technology. The mechanical engineering technology curriculum includes courses fundamental to mechanical engineering technology with an emphasis on applications.

    Before graduation, each student will participate in a design project or an internship in industry to gain industrial experience during his or her academic career before employment. The emphasis of this program is the application of engineering principles to the solution of practical problems. MET graduates are in great demand and are employed in a variety of interesting, high-tech careers throughout the state and region. Employment opportunities are available in mechanical design, industrial engineering technology, industrial management, manufacturing, CAD, applied research and sales and service.

    Program Educational Objectives and Student Outcomes


    Student outcomes (SOs) describe what students are expected to know and be able to do by the time of graduation. Specifically, ABET EAC Criterion 3 specifies the following (minimal) required SOs:

    a.     An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering

    b.     An ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data

    c.     An ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability

    d.     An ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams

    e.     An ability to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems

    f.      An understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities

    g.     An ability to communicate effectively

    h.     The broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context

    i.      A recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in, life-long learning

    j.      A knowledge of contemporary issues

    k.     An ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice

    Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) are broad statements that describe what graduates of the program are expected to have attained within a few years of graduation. For the EWU Electrical Engineering program the following PEOs have been defined:

    Objective 1: Students will have the ability to apply mathematics, science, engineering concepts, techniques and modern tools necessary in the field of electrical engineering.

    Objective 2: Students will have social and leadership skills such as effective communication skills, team work skills and independent learning ability. 

    Objective 3: Students will understand the impact of professionalism, ethical responsibility, and social, economic, technical and global implications of their engineering contributions. 

    Objective 4: Students will fulfill the diverse and changing electrical engineering needs in the Northwest Region.

    What will I study?

    Engineering Graphics and 3D Parametric Computer Aided Drafting

    Learn to convey your ideas with today's powerful drafting and parametric modeling software. Study concludes with the creation of actual prototype from the rapid prototyper.

    Statics, Dynamics, Thermodynamics, Strength of Materials, Fluids and Electricity

    These courses build on concepts introduced in the general physics series and form the basis for more detailed exploration and problem solving in the realm of mechanical engineering.

    Industrial Materials, Metallic processes and the Design of Machine Elements

    Become familiar with industry standards for technical metals and other materials. Learn the fundamentals of metalworking tools and procedures and apply your knowledge to the study of machine elements and components.

    Robotics, Programming for Engineers and Project Management

    Utilize actual industrial robots in the robotics laboratory to learn automated industrial systems programming and implementation. Coursework includes group projects initiated, designed and managed by students.

    Choose a design or Manufacturing Track

    The Mechanical Engineering Technology Program requires that students choose to emphasize, through a series of elective courses, either a manufacturing or design focus to fill out their studies.
