    The Internship Requirement

    The BA in Children's Studies requires an internship or practicum.  Students receive academic credit as interns by working with employers in positions related to their career interests. The internship is a collaborative learning process initiated by the student and facilitated by their academic advisor, their site supervisor, and the Career Services Internship Office.

    Students primarily initiate the internship process. However, it is a good idea to talk with your faculty advisor, check out resources in the Children's Studies office, visit with a Children's Studies peer mentor, and/or visit the EWU Career Services Internship office for ideas about possible/appropriate internship sites and contacts.

    The Children's Studies major requires 4 credits of internship or a total of 160 hours. However, your internship does much more than just meet your degree requirement; it is a way for you to strengthen your resume, build your career portfolio, and extend your professional network. Students can elect to take 1-2 credits a quarter for several quarters rather than all 4 credits in one quarter.  They can also elect to work with different employers in different quarters.  In a typical quarter, the number of hours per week you would work on site would follow the guideline below:

     

    1 credit = 4 hours per week
    2 credits = 8 hours per week
    3 credits = 12 hours per week
    4 credits = 16 hours per week

     

    Registering for Internship Credits

    To register for internship credits, see your faculty advisor to complete a Special Course Approval/Registration Form.  Internship credits may be CDST 495-21, CEDP 495, SOCI 495, or other approved departmental internships.  It is expected that students have declared a major and have completed a significant amount of their course work that can be applied to the work place.

    Completing the Learning Contract

    The Learning Contract is "the link between the student, the work-site supervisor, the Internship Office, and the internship faculty advisor.  It is the key document that ensures that everyone involved is 'on the same page.'"

    The Learning Contract outlines expectations, roles, and responsibilities for the student, the site supervisor, and the academic advisor.  It also outlines the process of documentation. It is important to complete this document early with both your site supervisor and your academic advisor.  Be sure that you understand expectations on the job, any academic assignments associated with the internship (e.g., reflections, journals, self-evaluations) and how you will be evaluated for the final grade.

    Please be sure that you read and understand the Internship Guidelines and the Learning Contract and that you meet the deadlines for submitting the learning contract and site evaluations.

    Cheney Parks & Recreation:

    Needed:
    Youth Sports Coach- these positions will be filled as leagues arise

    Office Volunteer:
    Office volunteers will create and maintain a consistent schedule of weekly hours. The responsibilities of the office volunteers will vary based upon needs. Activities may involve researching within or outside the community, seeking alternative funding, creating or implementing programs or events, and working directly with the general public and Community Recreation Director.

    Program Volunteer:
    Program volunteers will work specifically with individual programs. The volunteer must coordinate with the program staff and Community Recreation Director to determine their role with the program. Examples of program volunteer opportunities include swimming lesson assistants, after school program volunteers, youth day camp volunteers, ect.

    On Call Volunteer:
    The Cheney Parks & Recreation department is creating a volunteer call list. These volunteers will be utilized on a limited basis and only contacted when there is a direct need. Often times this will be for the creation and implementation of special events, or for specific one-time assignments.

    Crescent Core Cheney Alternative Middle School

    The Crescent Core is an alternative learning environment designed to meet the needs of students who have not found success in the traditional school setting. The program serves 6th-8th grade students in a multi-age setting with an integrated curriculum.
