Merry Jo DeMarais finds her work as an advocate for the well-being of individuals, organizations, and communities especially rewarding.
Dr. DeMarais' formal education includes: undergraduate work from St. Leo College and University of Maryland while in the Military, a BA in Communications from Metropolitan State University, St. Paul, MN; a MA in Management from the College of St. Scholastica, Duluth MN, and a PhD in Leadership Studies from Gonzaga University, Spokane WA. The integration of Dr. DeMarais' lived experience and broad academic background with her ongoing educational pursuits has directly influenced her work in public, private, not-for-profit, and academic work sectors.
Congruent with her passion to serve, Merry Jo is engaged in community leadership as a member of the city of Spokane's Community Housing and Human Services (CHHS) board and chair of the Continuum of Care committee. Additionally, she has served on national and state boards of health and safety. Merry Jo has facilitated and consulted in the areas of process improvement, strategic planning, organizational behavior and organizational development, auditing, assessment and evaluation, sustainable public health practices and providing long term care spiritual support. As a trained spiritual director from the Center for Spiritual Guidance, Merry Jo presents workshops on well-being as a personal practice to maximize workplace effectiveness.
Dr. DeMarais's roles within EWU's Health Services Administration have included: lecturer, academic undergraduate advisor, and faculty advisor to the program's student organization. In each instance she applies a holistic approach to facilitating the development of resilience, sustainable adaptability to change, and the practice of well-being.
