It truly is spring in the Inland Northwest - spring flowers are starting to bloom and there's still snow to be seen in some areas.  As we wind down the last quarter of 2010-2011, we look forward to the warm, dry weather that is sure to come our way.

    Retiring

Nancy Wainwright retired at the end of Winter quarter after 24 years of service to EWU.  Rachel Maldonado has indicated her plans for retiring at the end of the school year.  She has been with the College since 1999.  We wish only the best wishes for Nancy and Rachel as they enter this next phase of their careers.

    Hiring

The following people have signed contracts with the College and will begin teaching at Eastern this fall.

Interviews are still underway for an assistant professor of Accounting.  We are also conducting searches for lecturers in Accounting, Decision Science, Public Administration, and Planning.

    Dean's Search

The search committee has been working hard in reviewing applications for the CBPA Dean's position.  They have identified the first round of candidates and will be conducting phone interviews in the next two weeks.  Finalists should be identified for bringing to the area for on-campus interviews in May.

    Events

Don't forget the Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) workshops to be held this quarter.  Be sure to check your e-mail for announcements, topics, and presenters.  For further information, contact Bruce Teague at bteague@ewu.edu or 828-1258.

    Friday, April 8

    Friday, May 13

As part of the Contemporary Issues in Feminist Research, the Women's and Gender Studies Program will be featuring Dr. Kelley Cullen, Assistant Professor of Economics on Tuesday, April 19, 12 to 12:50 in Monroe Hall, room 207.  Kelley's topic is "Shattering the Glass Backboard?  Changes in Gender Equity in Pro & College Sports."  Although Title IX has greatly advanced opportunities for females participating in athletics, this study uses evidence from the "Racial & Gender Report Cards" for professional sports and the NCAA to show that there has been less advancement in the coaching ranks, administration and team ownership.

Beta Alpha Psi Banquet, Friday, May 20, Red Lion Hotel at the Park.  Contact ewu_bap@yahoo.com if you would like to attend.

Drive For Scholarships Golf Classic, Friday, June 3, The Creek at Qualchan.  Contact Sharlene Bozanich for entry forms.  Registration begins at 11 am with Shotgun Start at 12:30 pm.  Dinner and awards at the conclusion of the tournament.  Last year over $14,000 was raised to go towards college scholarships.  Plan to attend this year to either help as a volunteer or participate in the golf.  Either way, this is a lot of fun for all participants.

CBPA Awards Reception, Thursday, June 9, 4:00 - 5:30 pm, Riverpoint Campus, Phase 1 Auditorium.  Awards and induction ceremonies followed by a dessert reception.

Commencement, Saturday, June 11, Roos Field.  Undergraduate ceremony at 9 am; Graduate ceremony at 2 pm.  For more information on graduation visit:  http://access.ewu.edu/Records-and-Registration/Graduation/Commencement.xml.

Faculty, if you need to rent your cap and gown, you may do so by ordering on-line through Jostens at http://college.jostens.com/jostens/index.jsp?affiliateId=1119012.  The deadline for ordering for guaranteed delivery is Tuesday, April 26.  The dean's office is no longer able to subsidize the cost of rentals due to budgetary constraints.

    Book Drive

Thanks to all who donated books for the EWU H.O.M.E. program Book Drive.  These books will be used in their distribution efforts.

    Riverpoint Road Construction

If you've been to the Riverpoint campus this spring, you've already noticed the road construction.  The work is scheduled through the summer with plans for completion around the end of September - just in time for "back to school."  For more details and updates on this and other road projects in the area, visit:  http://spokaneroadfix.net.

    All College Barbecue

The tradition will continue with a barbecue for all faculty and staff to be held mid-summer.  Look for more details later this quarter on date, time, and location.  We had an enjoyable time last summer and look forward to everyone getting together again.

    Terry Novak Public Service Scholarship

The university faculty and staff, the Spokane community and most notably Barbara Novak and the extended Novak family, have joined together to create a $25,000 endowment to provide an annual scholarship to an Eastern student who is pursuing a Master of Public Administration degree.  Eligible students must intend to have a career in the public service sector.  To read the full press release regarding this endowment, go to http://www.ewu.edu/About/EWU-News/Novak-Endowment.xml.
