     New Dean on board

    The College welcomed its new dean, Martine Duchatelet, in June.  She was able to spend the summer quarter getting to know many of the faculty, staff and students, and has been pleased with the professionalism of the college and the dedication of its faculty.  Her appointment was noted in AACSB's publication, BizEd, in the July/August 2012 edition on "Women Take the Dean's Chair."  Beth Tipton has been appointed to the associate dean's position for the College effective November 1.  She will relinquish her position as chair of the Accounting and Information Systems department to Duanning Zhou who was elected as chair by the department faculty for a four-year term.

    Bruce Teague - Associate Professor of Management

    The Economics department selected Nathan Skuza for the assistant professor of economics position.  He was previously lecturer in that department.  The Economics department also hired two new teaching faculty members: Roberta Greene as lecturer and Vidhura Tennekoon as visiting assistant professor.  Roberta Greene was most recently a member of the Higher Education Coordinating Board and served on the Spokane City Council.  Vidhura Tennekooen is a recent PhD graduate from Washington State University.

    The PA department hired Carmen Apaza to assume the duties of director of the MPA program.  She will begin her duties as soon as her immigration status allows her to work, hopefully by mid-Fall.  She was the Principal Expert in Public Administration for the Department for Effective Public Management at the Organization of American States (OAS) - Secretariat for Political Affairs in Washington, DC for the last two years.

    Leadership Series

    The Accounting Advisory Board organized the second event in their successful Leadership Series on October 3.  Three panelists spoke to students about "The Plan, the Paper and the Package" or what it takes to land a job.  Panelists included Gini Hinch from EWU Career Services, Alice Hardin, senior Human Resources consultant at Red and Associates LLC, and Jeff Wibert, president of Family Home Care.  Slides from their presentations will soon be available on the college web site for students and faculty to access. 

    Bellevue Business Leadership Program - Oct. 25

    Nancy Koeper, President of the Northwest Region of United Parcel Services (UPS) will be presenting a lecture on Thursday, Oct. 25 at the Bellevue Campus at 11:30 am.  The presentation will also be broadcast live to Cheney (Kingston 334) and Spokane (Phase One, Room 112).

    Chili Cook-Off, Oct. 26

    The annual Chili Cook-Off, hosted by the faculty and students from the Urban and Regional Planning program, will take place on Friday, October 26, 6 - 10 pm at the South Campus Facility court.  Categories for chili competition are 1) Real Chili (no beans); 2) Pseudo Chili; and 3) International Dish.  Or, you can bring a potluck main dish, dessert or salad.  Judging for the chili begins promptly at 6:30 pm.  Costumes are encouraged.  Come and join in the festivities with food, music, dancing and fun!!  Rsvp to Rose Morgan, 828-1218 or

    Blackboard to Canvas Training, Oct. 26 and Nov. 2

    EWU is switching from Blackboard to Canvas Winter quarter.  The TEL Committee will host training sessions to help faculty and staff learn how to use the new system.  A session will be held in Cheney (location to be determined) on October 26.  A session will be held at Riverpoint on November 2 (location to be determined).  Both sessions will begin with lunch at 12:30 - 1:00 followed by the training sessions.  If you are interested in attending, please notify Chris Babcock (Cheney session) or Sharlene Bozanich (Spokane session).  Chris:, 359-4245; Sharlene:, 828-1226.

    T.R. Reid - Nov. 13

    T. R. Reid returns to Spokane on Tuesday, November 13 to lead discussions on "Health Care in Spokane - the good news."  T.R. is a news correspondent and filmmaker for the Washington Post, NPR and PBS and screenwriter/narrator of the PBS documentary special U.S. Health Care:  The Good News.  He will be available for luncheon for CBPA faculty, staff and guests, 11-12:30.  At 5:30, he will be the focal point of an event open to the greater community, he will talk about his documentary film and lead a panel of local and national health care leaders discussing how to build a high quality, efficient and cost-effective health care system.  All events are free.  The noon luncheon will be held in the Phase 1 Gallery at Riverpoint, and the evening program will be held at the Spokane Convention Center.

    E. Clair Daniels Symposium - Nov. 14

    This year's E. Clair Daniels Symposium will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at the Spokane Club, 12 - 2 pm.  Nancy Pasternack, Manager, KPMG, will be speaking on the topic, "Who is the Typical Fraudster."  Rsvp's are required by contacting Susan Lopez at, 828-1220.

    Faculty Activity

    Kelley Cullen was named the Associated Students of EWU (ASEWU) Professor of the Year and was recognized at the campus-wide EWU Excellence Awards ceremony held in June 2012.

    Patrick Jones was notified that he will receive a grant ($19,000) from the United Way of Kootenai County to study Kootenai County Trends.  Additionally, he will receive $18,000 to continue the work on the Walla Walla Trends Web Maintenance.  He also received $29,000 from Columbia Basin Health to do a Community Needs Assessment for Connell, Mattawa, and Othello.

    Harm-Jan Steenhuis was the keynote speaker at the 3rd International Conference on Business and Economics held in September in Cape Town, South Africa.  His topic was "Economic Development and International Business."  The conference focused on "Frontiers of Business, Economics, and Globalizaation."

    Tom Trulove has been appointed to Governor Christine Gregoire's Washington Freight Mobility Strategic Investment Board.

    Dick Winchell and Richard Rolland have received additional funding ($70,000) for their work with the Northwest Tribal Technical Assistance program.  He also received $10,000 for the Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship.

    Student Achievements

    Students presented several papers at the EWU Student Research and Creative Works Symposium held in May.
