    Dean's Search Update

    Both print and on-line advertising for the Dean's position have gone out and applications are coming in.  The Search Committee is comprised of the department chairs, outside business constituents and students.  The committee will be vetting the candidates in the upcoming weeks with hopes that candidates can be brought to campus before the end of the quarter.  As we near the time for on-campus interviews, you will be contacted to let you know when forums will be held and other times candidates will be available during their visit.

    Sedona Reminder

    In addition to notifying the dean's office of your recent publication/presentations, this is also another reminder to be sure to enter your scholarly activity into Sedona.  As was mentioned to you at the retreat and sent to everyone by e-mail, we have a student who can help you manage/maintain your Sedona information.  Eric Dean will be working for the college this year to help with your Sedona entries.  He can be reached at or call him at 509-990-3138.  We are also seeking information on community service/course related projects.  The community service section in Sedona has a specific place to put such information.  Thanks for your help in getting that information for your community service related courses.

    Mr. Reid is a correspondent and reporter for The Washington Post, NPR and PBS, and author of The Healing of America.  Reid will take a look at models that work in other nations and explain how they could work in the U.S.

    This is a leadership Lecture Series for students to cover the topic of "what does it take to become successful."  Be sure to encourage students to attend one of the presentations either in Cheney or Spokane.

    New Searches

    The college has received authorization to search for a tenure-track position in Economics.  Advertising and recruiting is underway with hopes to have the position filled during winter quarter.


    Department Updates

    Accounting & Information Systems

    Xiaohong (Shelley) Fan - Assistant Professor of Accounting.  Shelley will be joining the faculty in Winter 2012.  She received her BA in Accounting from Gongshang University, China; her MA in Accounting from Changchun Taxation Institute, China; and expects to complete her PhD in Accounting from the University of Texas at Arlington.  She has served as a research assistant for the National Accounting Institute in Beijing, China and as an Assistant to the CFO for the Otis Elevator Company.

    Atsushi Inoue - Professor of Management Information Systems.  Atsushi transferred to the CBPA spring 2011 from the Computer Science Department.  He has a BS and MS in Computer Science from Eastern Washington University, and a PhD in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Cincinnati.  He has been at EWU since 2002

    Lei Wang - Assistant Professor of Accounting.  Lei received his BA in English from Henan University in Henan, China; his MA in Accountancy from East Tennessee State University; and he is ABD in Accounting from the University of South Carolina.  He has served as a staff accountant and financial analyst and has professional certifications as a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Certified Public Accountant (CPA), and is Accredited in Business Valuation (ABV).

    Feng (Susan) Dan Visiting Chinese Scholar in Business Communications.  Susan is currently an associate professor of business communications at Qingdao Harbour Vocational and Technical College in the Shandong Province, China.  She will be at EWU for 6 months to observe teaching methodologies.



    Justin Bucciferro - Assistant Professor of Economics.  Justin has a BA in Latin American Studies, and a BS in International Business from Plattsburgh State University of New York, an MBA in Economics/Supply Chain Management from Clarkson University, and an MA and PhD in Economics from the University of Colorado at Boulder.  His prior experience includes teaching, research, and business experience as an owner of Silver Spell Jewelry, and as an accounting analyst, managing consultant and systems manager.

    Germán Muchnik-Izón - Assistant Professor of Economics.  Germán received his BA in Economics and Mathematics and his MA and PhD in Economics from the University of New Mexico.  He has previous experience in both teaching and research.  Germán has been teaching at EWU since Fall 2010.

    Nathan Skuza - Lecturer in Economics.  Nathan has a BA in Political Science from Central Washington University, and an MS in Statistics and a PhD in Economics from Washington State University.  His research interests include experimental economics, agricultural marketing and economics, and applied econometrics.



    Abrahim Soleimani - Assistant Professor of Management.  Abraham has a PhD from Florida International University.  He received his MBA from Sharif University of Technology and his BSc from Amir Kabir University of Technology, both in Tehran, Iran.  His teaching experience is in Organizational, International and Strategic Management.

    Sohyoun (Synthia) Shin - Assistant Professor of Marketing.  Synthia has a BS in Economics from Ewha Womans University, an MS in Administrative Studies (Multinational Commerce) from Boston University, and a PhD in Marketing from the Korea University Business School.  She has several years of teaching experience as well as business and professional experience as a manager, consultant, brand manager, and researcher for several major corporations.


    Urban Planning, Public & Health Administration

    Larry Luton was elected department chair for a term beginning in July 2011.  Dick Winchell will be the director of the Urban and Regional Planning program and Rosanne London will be the director of the MPA program.

    Veronica Elias - Assistant Professor of Public Administration.  Veronica has a BA in Geography from the National University of the South, Bahia Blanca, Argentina; an MA in Geography and Urban Planning and a PhD in Urban Studies and Public Affairs from the University of Akron.  She was most recently an assistant professor at IUPUI, Fort  Wayne.

    Gregg Dohrn - Faculty in Residence, Urban & Regional Planning.  Gregg has a BA in Urban Studies from the University of Puget Sounds, and an MA of Urban Planning from Portland State University.  He has been teaching on a quarterly basis since 2007 and serves on the Professional Advisory Board to the Department.  Gregg has over 30 years of experience in the planning profession and he also owns his own business, G. R. Dohrn and Associates.

    Kelvin Frank - Faculty in Residence, Urban & Regional Planning.  Kelvin will be teaching in the Urban and Regional Planning program as well as serving as Director of the Tribal Planning Certificate Program.  He has a BA, MURP, and MPA from Eastern Washington University and a PhD in Leadership Studies from Gonzaga University.  Kelvin has 15 years of experience in planning, community development, human resources, grant writing, and tribal transportation.

    University/Community Service

    Vance Cooney and Larry Davis are working with the Spokane Symphony Associates to prepare a paperless raffle system for the annual Christmas Tree Elegance event.

    Kelley Cullen had six (6) students submit abstracts for research projects that were presented at the May Research and Creative Works Symposium.

    Tom Trulove received the Paul J. Raver Community Service Award from the Northwest Public Power Association (NWPPA) at their annual meeting in May, held in Reno, Nevada.  The award is given to an individual that has worked toward the betterment of cities, states or regions.  NWPPA covers Northern California, Oregon, Nevada, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Alaska, British Columbia, and Alberta.

    Dick Winchell's students in his PLAN 422, Tribal Economic Development course, submitted their business plan, "The Salish Grill:  A Unique Culinary Experience for the Inland Northwest."  Angelena Campobasso and Raymond Allen's plan received second place at the Tribal Business Plan Competition in Arizona, and they also received second place at the Business Plan Competition held in Spokane.  Congratulations!

    L & R

    And, what do those L & R's mean that are on the classroom walls in Phase 1 at Riverpoint?  In the past, someone, whether teacher or student we're not sure, couldn't tell their L from their R, so they would use a permanent marker and write the letters on the wall.  In order to alleviate having to repaint the walls, the letters have been tacked to the walls.  Otherwise, they have no special significance, at least as far as we know.
