In an attempt to reach out to more of our students, I am hopeful your assistance will help us spread the word about a scholarship we offer called The Florence and Earle Stewart scholarship. This scholarship is unique in the aspect that it offers our students an opportunity to enrich their knowledge through a fun, relaxing way. The intent of the scholarship is to foster personal breadth through cultural experiences. The scholarship guidelines are:
1) "Textbooks" are specifically excluded. Also excluded are materials which are essentially guides or manuals dealing with such items as instrumental course-related operations, information which pertains to specific changing or intermittent data or requirements, or to other ephemeral print, including periodical subscriptions.
2) Purchases from the award are to fulfill the emphasis on "classic" materials or cultural experience. This emphasis is intended to promote the intellectual quality and/or relative permanence of the proposed purchases. It is expected that the level of books requested will reflect the student's own stage of intellectual or scholarly development, to be useful at once as well as later.
3) The scholarship also promotes cultural experience through cultural events. The only requirement for students to apply is they must be full time, 10 credits. The Stewart Book Scholarship provides funds for full time students to purchase 2 books (NOT textbooks or reference books) for their personal enrichment worth up to $250.00 OR they can purchase 1 cultural event ticket (such as a symphony performance, art exhibit or theater presentation), up to $100.00, plus 1 book for a total of $250.00.
Our Eastern site can provide more details on the scholarship. Students can go online to submit their application: http://access.ewu.edu/academic-planning-/stewart-book-scholarship/how-and-when-to-apply Spring 15 quarter applications are open until April 24, 2015. Some examples of approved books/event are: cooking books, Worldly Cultural books, Classics collections, Herbal Health Care, Encyclopedia of the Solar System, Atlas of Human Anatomy, The Chronicles of Narnia, A Pattern of Language, Public Policy, The Complete Gospel Parallels, Aerodynamics, and the event Wicked. As you can see, the cultural experiences of learning for our students are vastly diverse. Thanks for helping us spread information to the students for this outstanding opportunity in increasing their cultural awareness. Please let me know if you have any questions. We are in need of more AVID tutors at Westwood Middle School. We have 6 spots available now through June 4th. We need tutors on Tuesday and Thursday from 12:30 to 1:20pm. The tutors can sign up for just one of these days a week. AVID tutoring is a volunteer opportunity for your students which gives them the benefit of a higher possibility of placement in our school for student teaching. Many of our AVID tutors in the past have been picked up by one of our teachers for student teaching.
If any of your education students are interested, please forward our contact information. You are also welcome to share with your education professors and we'd be happy to answer questions or share more information about this opportunity. The contact information for our AVID building coordinator and teacher is Randy Elam at email@example.com , 559-4177 or contact the assistant principal Tami Skillingstad at firstname.lastname@example.org, 559-4153.
