    Welcome to our new "Candidate of the Quarter" webpage for the Education Department.

    The Education Department is pleased to announce the Candidates of the Quarter for Winter 2016: 

    Amy Valdez is an Elementary Education student.  Amy has demonstrated exceptional performance and growth in all areas:  professionalism, leadership, scholarship and being a practitioner. 

    Candice Monreal  is a Secondary Education student.   Candice has demonstrated outstanding professional initiative and leadership. 

    Congratulations, Amy and Candice! 

    The "Candidate of the Quarter" award is for undergraduate education students.   

    This award will first be given in February 2016.  Students may be nominated by faculty, staff, supervisor or mentor teacher and the award is based on demonstrated excellence in the elements of our Conceptual Framework:            

    Professionals: Student-centered educators exhibit character and dispositions expected of professionals embarking on a life-long career. They relate well to diverse populations, communicate effectively, and hold themselves to high ethical standards.  

    Leaders: Student-centered educators think critically, mentor others, and encourage teacher voice as they work to create a learning atmosphere that reflects, collaborates, and advocates for the needs of the learning community.  

    Scholars: Student-centered educators know and apply current research to improve their instructional practices.  

    Practitioners: Student-centered educators reflect, collaborate, implement, integrate, transform, and build learning communities.

    Students who complete the following applications by February 15, 2016 will receive priority consideration for EWU financial aid for the 2016-17 academic year:

    FAFSA's received after February 15th are still considered, but awards are made on a funds-available basis and late applicants may not receive all the aid for which they might otherwise qualify. No EWU Scholarship applications will be accepted after February 15th, but departmental scholarship applications may have later deadline dates.Application Deadlines for 2015-16

    You can still apply for the 2015-16 academic year by submitting the 2015-16 FAFSA.  All FAFSA's for the 2015-16 academic year must be submitted by June 30, 2016.

    Candidacy Forms for Graduate Students

    Reminder:   Your candidacy form must be filed once you have completed 15-20 credits of your program.   Check with your advisor or with the Education Department Graduate Office in Williamson 314 or email


    Special Education Students

    It's time to think about registration for Spring Quarter 2016.   Please come to Williamson 310-312 and pick up a registration form.   Completed forms are to be returned to Williamson 310-312 by February 10th.


    Plan ahead for the Washington Educator Career Fair in Spokane on March 15, 2016 from 9:00an-2:00pm at the Spokane Convention Center. Early Bird registration ends March 1st and is only $20.00. Cost at the door on the day of the event is $30.00. The Tacoma Career Fair is scheduled for March 24th. Brochures on the 3rd floor of Williamson or go to


    Seattle Public Schools is currently advertising for teacher candidates for 2016-17.  In addition we are hosting a career fair on January 30th in our high needs areas, which consist of:     

    Special Education, English Language Learners (ELL), Language Immersion, Montessori w/Elementary Ed endorsement, World Languages, Creative Arts (music/art), School Nurse.     MTED 396-- Assessing Students' Fraction Knowledge K-6 - Spring 2016

    1 credit hour course for elementary education and elementary mathematics majors.

    course is designed to review current research on K-6 students' learning of fractions and on uses of assessment for identifying student knowledge of a topic. Emphasis will be on understanding the progression of elementary students' development of fraction knowledge, understanding how to create appropriate                                                                                                                                                                                          assessment tools for determining students' fraction knowledge, and understanding how to analyze students' responses to assessment items to determine students' progress in understanding fractions. Through readings, discussion and practice developing and implementing assessment tools, students will extend their knowledge of assessment in K-6 mathematics classrooms.

    Prerequisites:  Full-time student, MTED 390, acceptance into the Education Program, and practicum placement.

    Graduation Application Deadlines:

    UNDERGRADUATES: Your application is due two quarters ahead of graduation. No exceptions. 

    GRADUATE STUDENTS: Your application to graduate is due the second Friday of the quarter before you graduate.
