    I am extremely thankful for Dr. Steiner for going above and beyond in mentoring me in my research project. He invested a substantial amount of time in preparing me to become a successful graduate student and independent researcher.

    Ioannis Pikalov was born in Central Asia, Uzbekistan, and immigrated to the United States with his family when he was a teenager. He began school at Eastern Washington University in 2009, and has been on the Dean's list every quarter since then.  Over the last year, he has worked with Dr. Wes Steiner in Eastern's Chemistry and Biochemistry Department to develop a novel LC/MS/MS assay for Galanthamine in Guinea Pig blood plasma.  The research group developed a new high throughput sample preparation and method analysis assay to reproducibly and sensitively quantitate Galanthamine in guinea pig blood plasma. The goal was to find the quantity of Galanthamine needed to be administered to an individual person to safely counteract exposure to nerve agent. 

    During summer 2011, Ioannis also was given the opportunity to develop the florescence lab for EWU's Chemistry Instrumental Analysis course.  He is currently working in a group to quantify Galectin-3.  He plans to graduate in June of 2012, and pursue graduate studies in Analytical Chemistry in the fall.

    2011 TRiO McNair Research Internship-Development of a Novel LC/MS/MS Assay for Galanthamine in Guinea Pig Plasma and its Application to Nerve Agent Countermeasures

    Galanthamine (GAL) is a centrally acting reversible acetylcholinesterase inhibitor (AChEI) that is currently being studied in a role as an antagonist for the treatment of organophoshorus (OP) nerve agents induced lethality in guinea pigs. It has been shown that combined with atropine, a single dose of GAL administered before or soon after the acute exposure to lethal doses of OP compounds can safely counteract their toxicity in guinea pigs. To that end a new sample preparation and method analysis assay was developed to reproducibly and sensitively quantitate GAL in guinea pig blood plasma. Samples were prepared with diphenhydramine (DPH) internal standard in a simple one-step liquid-liquid organic precipitation extraction using Chloroform. The extracts were then analyzed with a reversed phase C18 liquid chromatographic column interfaced to a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (LC/MS/MS).
