Abstract: Algebra Curriculum: A Review of the Current Curricula, Grades 4-8
    Mentor: Dr. Diane Azim, Mathematics

For some, algebra is the solving of equations, graphing, functions, and other abstract ideas that do not relate to the world. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics; The Algebra Working Group in their discussion paper define algebra as "a symbol system of unparalleled power for communicating quantitative information and relationships; it is a training ground in careful rule-governed reasoning; its development is a significant thread in the history of mathematics; and its theoretical structure is based on concepts and principles that generalize to provide organizing schema in nearly every other branch of mathematics" (Algebra Working Group, 1995, p.7).
