Abstract: "And Boys Will Be Boys" Problems of Gender Harassment in Grade School

Sue Marie Wright and Melissa Hall

This study looks at the problems of sexual harassment in the grade school context. Starting with two actual incidents of harassment as reported to the researchers, this study explores the problems of defining sexual harassment in grade school (i.e., children are generally not viewed as sexual in our culture) and the responses of school administrators, teachers, and parents to this largely ignored problem. This feminist study attempts to place sexual harassment between peers in grade school in the context of our sexist society. Lack of respect for girls' concerns and lack of support in making "no" mean "no" in their early interactions may have consequences for their later development and may help explain the continuing levels of sexual violence against women.
