CHENEY, Wash. - Eastern Washington University will welcome 800 of the brightest middle and high school students in the state on Saturday, April 14, for the 2012 Washington State Science Olympiad. EWU's College of Science, Health and Engineering (CSHE) is serving as the main coordinating body for the 2012 state finals.

Forty teams, divided by class standing, will compete in 50 events - including Disease Detectives, Crime Busters, Robot Arm and Helicopters. The challenging events are separated into different science categories, such as biology, geology, physics, astronomy and chemistry. Each exciting task is designed to test knowledge and problem-solving skills, while improving science education throughout the state.

Students taking part in the state finals all advanced from regional competitions around Washington. Winners of this event will advance to the national Science Olympiad tournament at Orlando, Florida.

"Eastern is proud to host an event that improves the quality of K-12 education in the state," said CSHE Dean Judd Case. "Having the state's brightest students on campus will also give Eastern the opportunity to showcase its fine programs in math, science and engineering."

Events are scheduled from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. throughout campus. After events and judging, winners will be announced during closing ceremonies, starting at 4:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend the day-long competition. Schedules may be obtained at the Pavilion or in the Science Building lobby.

Washington Science Olympiad was founded in 1986. For more information, including a listing of events, schedules and directions to the EWU campus, please visit www.ewu.edu/scienceolympiad or contact tournament Co-Director Sue Murphy at 509.359.6809.
