Steven Pinker: The Better Angels of Our Nature - Why Violence Has Declined

A History of Violence: An evening with Steven Pinker
Thursday, Nov. 14, 7 p.m. - INB Performing Arts Center, Spokane

Faced with the ceaseless stream of news about war, crime, and terrorism, one could easily think we live in the most violent age ever seen. In this startling and engaging talk, New York Times bestselling author Steven Pinker argues just the opposite is true.

One of the world's leading cognitive scientists, Pinker translates his groundbreaking research into articles and books that are accessible to the general reader. His books include The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined, which garnered a New York Times Book Review Notable Book of the Year award, The Blank Slate and How The Mind Works, both bestsellers, and both finalists for the Pulitzer Prize.

Pinker is Johnstone Professor of Psychology at Harvard and has also taught at Stanford and MIT. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, has won a number of teaching prizes, and was named among Newsweek's "100 Americans for the Next Century."

Pinker's appearance is sponsored by The Daniel and Margaret Carper Foundation Lecture Series and Eastern Washington University. A book signing in the lobby of the theater will follow the event.
