    What is discrimination? What is sexual harassment?

    The term discrimination, as it is used throughout this policy, means all forms of discrimination and sexual harassment as defined by state and federal antidiscrimination laws.

    a. Eastern Washington University does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, genetic information, age, marital status, families with children, honorably discharged  veteran or military status or the presence of any sensory, mental, or physical disability or the use of a trained dog guide or service animal by a person with a disability. Any discriminatory action can be a cause for disciplinary action.

    a. Sexual harassment is a form of discrimination and is a violation of the basic tenets of human dignity. Sexual harassment violates university policies, federal and state civil rights laws, and professional ethics. Eastern Washington University does not tolerate sexual harassment. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission defines sexual harassment as:

    Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature when: This conduct explicitly or implicitly affects an individual's employment, unreasonably interferes with an individual's work performance, or creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive work environment.

    Do I have to report or file a complaint if I am aware that an incident of discrimination or sexual harassment has occurred?

    Our mission at EWU is to promote an environment that is free of discrimination, sexual harassment, and retaliation; we strive to create a climate of diversity, inclusivity, and mutual respect. To that end, you are encouraged, though not required by law, to report or file a complaint if you have been the victim of discrimination or sexual harassment.

    However, if you are aware that someone in the campus community has been the victim of sexual harassment, you must report the incident to Gayla Thomas, Director, in the Office of EO/AA/Title IX/ADA Compliance.


    How do I file a complaint or report an incident of discrimination or sexual harassment?

    You may file an internal or external complaint. If you would like to report or file a discrimination or sexual harassment complaint internally, please complete the paperwork attached below, and return by mail or in-person to 218 Showalter Hall, ATTN: Gayla Thomas, Director EO/AA/Title IX/ADA Compliance. Please see additional campus resources on the Need Assistance? page. To file an external complaint, please go to the Washington State Human Rights Commission website for further instruction.

    How do I file for ADA Reasonable Accommodation Request?

    If you would like a ADA reasonable accommodation request please complete the paperwork attached below, and return by mail or in-person to 218 Showalter Hall, ATTN: Gayla Thomas, Director EO/AA/Title IX/ADA Compliance.
