EWU is committed to developing opportunities for students that are transformative and cultivate "professionally, socially and culturally engaged leaders, citizens and communities." We recognize that community engagement builds recognition, fosters support and expands opportunities for students, faculty, staff and graduates as well as the communities we serve.

We have recently prioritized community engagement as one of our four institutional strategic areas of focus.  As a result, the Office of Community Engagement (OCE) was established.  The OCE connects the campus to the wider community though meaningful, reciprocal partnerships in order to enrich student learning, address critical community need and foster a culture of civic responsibility and community engagement.

EWU has a historically strong culture of service and engagement.  Students from the professional schools to the hard sciences are given opportunities to apply their learning in real world settings in ways that directly benefit their local community.  Students engage in service through Greek and residence life programs, clubs, service-learning courses, and through a variety of community-based internships.   EWU faculty and staff are also deeply committed to service both inside and outside of the classroom.  Our faculty and staff serve on local non-profit boards, provide research and consultation services, and organize a host of regional community events.
